Voters are not Stupid (Part I)

I am running for City Council, because I want to see change in Fayetteville. I want our community to be safe again. I want our neighborhoods to be safe again. I want traffic in our streets to be safe again. I want more businesses and better jobs. I also want our city to prosper, because Fayetteville matters to me.

And while we’re at it, there’s something else I want too. I want our District 5 representative to just talk straight to people… not try to split hairs & confuse people with a play on words. I mean, think about it… if he voted for a bond then he voted to increase taxes. He can call it a “fee” or a “tax” or whatever he wants, but if voters are being hit up for more money this year on their tax bill than last year, that amounts to a “tax”.

Does our representative think the taxpayers are stupid? We are not!!

Our District 5 representative says that he will never vote for a tax increase… I guess that means he thinks it is okay to vote for a bond or a fee that has to be paid for by taxes, but not a property tax rate increase included in an annual “budget”. Again, does he think we’re stupid?

His cleverly worded claim concerns me on multiple levels. It sounds like a statement from someone who has never run a business or struggled to keep a business open during Covid or inflation. There are only two ways to balance a budget… increase revenue or decrease expenses.

If our representative is not successfully bringing enough new business to Fayetteville to grow our tax base, then how does he expect to pay for budget changes due to inflation and other reasons? How does he expect to pay for the pay raises for police officers and other staff, increased health insurance costs, increased fuel costs, increased supply costs, etc.?

So much for Mr. Dawkins claims on what HE will never do. Here is some straight talk from me… here is what I WILL NEVER do:

Here is what I WILL promise to do:

  • I will work HARD for you and our city every day.

  • I will work to get our city headed in the right direction.

  • I will work to make us all feel safe in our homes and in our community.

  • I will work to increase our tax base so we can reduce our individual tax burdens.

  • I will always be available to my constituents.

  • I will always talk straight to you.

  • I will continue to be the same transparent Lynne Greene that you see today.

I’m respectfully asking you to support me for City Council in District 5 on November 7.

 Lynne

P.S. See my blog tomorrow for Part 2. See my blog later this week for my opponent’s view on “cushy” retirement benefits for Council members vs. my view! Also see our City’s projects that my opponent did NOT support vs. my view, and my view on why we need collaboration and respect on the council if we want to move our city forward.
